Mountains, Lakes, Roads & Wild Places Worth Exploring

Lakes, mountain roads, viewpoints, forests and some of Montenegro's wildest landscapes — all within reach of PeaksView Chalets.

Durmitor isn't a place you need to experience through a checklist.

Some of its best days are surprisingly simple: drive somewhere beautiful, leave the car, walk for a while, stop when the view gets good and find somewhere for lunch on the way back.

From PeaksView Chalets, you can spend a few hours exploring or make an entire day of it.

Here are some of our favorite ways to discover Durmitor National Park and Žabljak.

START WITH THE CLASSICS

Black Lake

The easiest place to begin.

Crno Jezero — or Black Lake — is one of the best-known places in Durmitor National Park, and for good reason.

Surrounded by forest and mountains, it's an easy introduction to the landscape around Žabljak and works particularly well if you don't want to commit to a serious hike.

Walk to the lake, continue around it if you have time, or simply find a quiet spot and stay for a while.

Best for: First-time visitors, couples, families & easy walks
Allow: 1–3 hours
Good to know: It can be busier during the summer season, so earlier or later in the day is usually more peaceful.

Durmitor Ring

Take the long way around.

If you want to see a lot of Durmitor without spending the entire day hiking, drive the Durmitor Ring — the scenic road around the mountain massif.

The route takes you through dramatically different landscapes: open plateaus, mountain passes, small villages, valleys and viewpoints where you'll probably want to stop more often than expected.

Don't treat it like a road you need to finish quickly.

The stops are the point.

Best for: Scenic drives, photography & seeing more of Durmitor
Allow: Half day to full day
Our advice: Leave enough time for spontaneous stops.

Sedlo Pass

One of those places where you should get out of the car.

Sedlo is one of the most recognizable mountain landscapes around Durmitor.

Even if you're not planning a long hike, the drive itself and the surrounding views make it worth including in a day exploring the national park.

Stop. Walk a little. Look around.

Best for: Mountain views, photography & scenic drives
Combine with: Durmitor Ring

GET OUT OF THE CAR

Take a Hike

Durmitor is better on foot.

You don't need to climb the highest peak to experience the mountains properly.

There are routes around Durmitor for very different fitness and experience levels — from easy walks through forests and around lakes to long mountain hikes.

Choose according to the weather, season and your own experience.

Best for: Nature, mountain views & active days
Allow: From a couple of hours to a full day

Walk Through the Forest

Not every walk needs a destination.

The forests around Žabljak are part of what makes this area feel different from the rest of Montenegro.

If you have a free hour or two, leave the car behind and simply walk.

This works particularly well in the morning, late afternoon or when you don't feel like committing to a full mountain route.

SEE THE WILDER SIDE

Tara Canyon

Go beyond the mountains.

The Tara River cuts through one of the defining landscapes of northern Montenegro.

You can experience the canyon from viewpoints (Curevac) and bridges (Djurdjevica Tara Bridge), or make it part of a bigger adventure with rafting when conditions and the season allow.

It's farther from Peaksview than the immediate Durmitor sights, so give it enough time rather than squeezing it between several other stops.

Best for: Landscapes, road trips & rafting
Allow: Half day or more

Đurđevića Tara Bridge

One of the most recognizable stops around the Tara Canyon.

The bridge can be combined with a drive through the surrounding area, viewpoints along the canyon or an adventure activity nearby.

It's an easy addition when your day is already taking you toward Tara.

Best for: Views, photography & road trips

SLOW DOWN A LITTLE

Žabljak

Don't only drive through it.

Žabljak is the practical center of a Durmitor trip, but it's also worth slowing down for.

Stop for coffee. Have a long lunch after a hike. Try some local mountain food.

Pick up what you need and spend a little time in town before heading back into nature — or back to PeaksView Chalets.

Sometimes lunch is the itinerary.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR DURMITOR DAY

You don't need to fit every place above into a single route.

In fact, we wouldn't.

If you only have a few hours

PeaksView Chalets → Black Lake → Žabljak → PeaksView Chalets

Keep it simple.

Take a walk around the lake, stop for lunch or coffee and come back with plenty of the day left to enjoy PeaksView Chalets.

If you have half a day

PeaksView Chalets → Black Lake → scenic drive → viewpoint → Žabljak → PeaksView Chalets

A little walking, a little driving and enough time to stop whenever somewhere looks interesting.

If you have a full day

Peaksview → Durmitor Ring → Sedlo → mountain stops → lunch → Peaksview

Don't rush the Ring.

Leave early enough that you can stop frequently and still make it back before the evening.

If you want adventure

Build the day around one main activity.

A longer hike. Rafting. Horse riding. Or another outdoor experience.

Then come back to PeaksView Chalets and recover properly.

THEN COME BACK TO PEAKSVIEW Chalets

Exploring Durmitor is only half the day.

You don't need to stay outside until you're exhausted.

Come back.

Take off the hiking shoes.

Head to the heated pool and sauna for your reserved SPA session.

Then return to your chalet and get into your private jacuzzi.

As the temperature drops, stay outside for sunset — or head inside later and light the fireplace.

Tomorrow you can go somewhere else.
